(USA Today) Bargain hunters, get ready: $99 fares on flights from California to Iceland and Europe go on sale Tuesday morning.
Those eye-popping prices come from Icelandic carrier WOW, which will put seats on sale for its previously announced new routes from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Iceland. The flights, which go on sale at 9 a.m. ET, will begin in June with one-way fares to Reykjavik on sale for as little as $99 one way. Connections to WOW’s mainland European destinations – which include London, Paris and Berlin, among others – will start at $199 one way (all fares include mandatory taxes and fees).
WOW operates under an “ultra low-cost” business model based on undercutting rivals with cheap fares, but charging extra for nearly everything else. Spirit and Allegiant have brought that strategy into the mainstream in the U.S. while carriers like Ryanair and easyJet have done the same within Europe.
Like WOW, Norwegian Air also has been expanding its footprint in the USA. It offers fares for as little as $235 each way on flights to numerous destinations in Europe and has hinted even cheaper prices could be on the horizon.
