Walking time between Vienna's Wien Philadelphiabrücke and Wien Meidling?

Our overnight train arrives in Wien Westbahnhof on a tuesday morning in May. Our actual destination though is Graz, Austria. Apparently there are no trains from Wien Westbahnhof to Graz - only from Wien Meidling. The dbahn site says this:

---Wien Westbahnhof (U6) Tu, 18.05.10 dep 08:48 U 6 U-Bahn Direction: Wien Alterlaa

---Wien Philadelphiabrücke (U6) Tu, 18.05.10 arr 08:54

Wien Philadelphiabrücke (U6) Tu, 18.05.10 walk 7 min
Wien Meidling Tu, 18.05.10

---Wien Meidling Tu, 18.05.10 dep 09:03 6 OIC 555 ÖBB-IC

Graz Hbf Tu, 18.05.10 arr 11:33

It wants us to walk from Wien Philadelphiabrücke to Wien Meidling and thinks we can do it in 7 minutes? Is this accurate? For a pair of travelers who have never been there before? Would we really be able to catch the 9:03 train at Mielding to Graz? The next train is an hour later, so we won't be stranded. I'm just trying to give an accurate estimate for the people picking us up in Graz. Thanks!

In my experience, the Bahn estimates of walking time are generous. If they say you can do it in 7 min, you can probably do it in less. And you actually have 9 minutes (8:54-9:03) to do it. I haven't found a good Vienna map yet, but the Philadelphiabrücke U-Bahn stop is probably underground next to (or part of) the Meidling station.

If you are worried, the U6, Richtung Alterlaa runs every 6 min. Catch the one at 8:42 and get to Philadelphiabrücke at 8:48. That gives you 15 min to make the walk.

According to the Vienna metro map, Philadelphiabrücke is the U-Bahn stop for Meidling Bhf.

Here is a brochure from Austrian Rail showing the layout of the Meidling Bahnhof. The U6 runs under the station perpendicular to the tracks. It looks like you come up escalators to the cross-connecting tunnel under the platforms.

I was just in Vienna and we took a train from the Meidling station to the Czech Republic.

To get to Meidling we took the U-6 to the Philadel. stop (I believe a few U-Bahn lines converge at this station), which is where the Meidling train station is. Everything was all right there very close to where we got off the U-Bahn, including the monitors that tell you from which track your train will depart. I believe if we had to, we could have made it to our train within 7 minutes.

Something I'm not sure of here is that your directions say to take the U-6 in the direction of Alterlaa and although it may very well say that at the Westbahnhof station (I'm certainly no expert!), we traveled on the U-6 in the same direction that you will be but our train was in the direction of Siebenhirten (same direction as Alterlaa, but usually the direction of a train is designated by its last stop, which is Siebenhirten. It's odd to me they say Alterlaa, which is not the last stop but the 3rd from the last stop. With not having much time to spare for the transfer you may want to make note of both names, just in case). To see what I mean on the Vienna mass tranist map, click HERE.

I hope this helps, but if there is still some confusion or concern, I found the TripAdvisor.com forums to be extremely useful about such matters. Lots of on-the-ground experts over there.

Good luck!

EDIT: I just noticed that Lee (above) also gave you a link to the Vienna train system. Sorry for the redundancy!

Angela, good catch. There are trains from Westbahnhof to Philadelphiabrücke every 3 min. Every other one (8:42, 8:48) only goes to Alterlaa; the others (8:39, 8:45) go to Siebenhirten. They can take either one, whichever comes first.

Again, according to the Bahn website (put in "Wien Meidling", the date and 9:00 departure), OIC 555 (or OIC 15555) is scheduled to leave Meidling station on track (Gleis 6). So, when you come up from the U-Bahn station, look for the 6 sign. When you get to the platform, check the overhead sign to make sure that the train is indeed OIC 555.

Lee's amazing. IN all my years of travel, and traveling, he's the best resource I've ever found (seriously. lol)

Corey, I'd give yourself the extra hour to wake up, and grab some breakfast, there are lots of little places in the station and the underground to grab some good breakfast food.

The walk with luggage at that time of day would also be a little crazy (it can get busy), so a little extra time there wouldn't hurt.

FYI - The train trip to Graz is beautiful. - The first half of the trip is pretty... bland (for lack of a better word), but the second half is amazing, and worth staying up for. Beautiful Scenery. My advise: If you take a nap, do it during the first half! =)

Have fun!
