We are visiting Germany this summer and I am interested in hiking from Braubach to Boppard (I gather it would be a ferry crossing at Boppard?). Can anyone tell me how long this is? I can not find anything useful online. Thanks,
Jen
According to Google Maps, it's 11.2 km. The time should be 2h21min. That works out to be about 3 mph. The route is along the side of Hwy 42 most of the way, but cuts across the bend at Filsen. In 2004, I crossed the Rhein on the ferry at Boppard and walked about 1 km to the bahnhof in Filsen, then took the train to Braubach, then did the reverse coming back.
English text on hiking in the area: http://www.welterbe-mittelrheintal.de/index.php?id=51&L=3 If you use the recently-developed Rheinsteig trail, you'll pass through Osterspai (11.5 km from Braubach), then Filsen on your way to Boppard. Trail profiles, distance, and time estimates are here; see stages 14 & 15: http://www.rheinsteig.de/en/routes-and-maps/oberes-mittelrheintal/ Trail markers: http://www.rheinsteig.de/en/rheinsteig-trail-management/route-indicator/ Signage: http://www.rheinsteig.de/en/rheinsteig-trail-management/signposts/ The Rhine Castle Path (Rheinburgenweg) provides hiking opportunities on the opposite bank; stage 8 covers the same part of the river over there: http://www.rheinburgenweg.com/etappentourenplaner/oberes-mittelrheintal/
Yes, I was thinking of the Rheinsteig path. Is it fairly easy to navigate? And how challenging is the hike, or are there different routes to choose from?
Thank you so much for all the help!
I haven't hiked that section you mention and don't know anything more about it than those websites will tell you. The small sections I've hiked were in the St. Goar/Oberwesel area.
