Waiting to buy point-to-point tickets in France and Spain

In October, we are planning to be in Paris for two days, and then taking the train to San Sebastian. Must I go through Rail Europe to make reservations ahead (seems to be rather expensive), or will I be able to make reservations while in Paris. When the trip calls for reservations, I'm a little confused as to how far ahead that means (like, 24 hours ahead, a week ahead?).

You need the reservation the moment you step on the train. It is a seat reservation. Since the train platform is probably 15 minutes away you need to make your reservations at least 15 minutes early. Just means you cannot pay for your ticket on the train. Years ago that was possible on some trains. And, depending on the train system, not all trains require a seat reservation. Some you just get on and find a non reserved seat and sit down. The only advantage to early reservations is the possibility of discounted tickets. But that locks you into a schedule and the discounted ticket may be worthless if you miss the train. Most time a day or two in advance is sufficient time. If you are going to make reservations on this side of the water, go to the national rail lines web sites. Rail Europe is a travel agency or a reseller of tickets on limited trains at higher prices.

Thanks so much, you explained it well. This will make it so much easier on planning our travels - not to have everything "nailed" down so that we have little flexibility as we travel.
