VISITING CINQUE TERRE

We arrive in Rome 4/21 and depart from Pisa 4/27. Have been to Rome and Florence but not to Cinque Terre. Saw cheap air to Genoa so wondering if flying there and going east to CT made sense. Plan to hike around CT. Flight out of Pisa 10:30 pm so could stay last night in Lucca? Any suggestions welcome!

Sandra Even with your short time in Italy, I think you could go to both Cinque Terre and Tuscany. Into Genoa and out of Pisa would be perfect for this. Check out RS Home Page on the status of the hiking trails after October flood/landslide in Vernazza and Monterrosso. The trails are supposed to be done by April. The National Park trails between the villages can be done in a day if you are fit. I don't know the status of the upper trails. Still a wonderful place to go now! But a week is way to much time to spend there. If you haven't been to Siena in Tuscany, you could base yourself in this walled town and take day trips by car to the villages and countryside. Perhaps there are hikes and probably bike tour/rental nearby. Have a great time! Bobbie

Sandra, It would help if you could provide a bit more information on your travel plans. Are you planning to arrive in Rome and then fly to Genoa? I agree with the previous reply that with six days it would be good to spend a few days in Siena and a few days in the Cinque Terre. Happy travels!

Hi Sandra. Not sure if you are considering flying to Genoa instead of Rome? Or after spending time in Rome. If already in Rome, simply take the train to CT. Easy train from Rome to CT and CT back to Pisa. See trenitalia.com; use La Spezia or Monterosso for your city in CT when checking trains. You could last day in CT (or Lucca) and train to Pisa airport for 10:30 PM flight. Enjoy your trip!

To clarify, we have mileage seats to Rome and returning from Pisa so locked into those as what was available. I saw $61 fare flying from Rome to Genoa which would seem to eliminate backtracking and was cheaper than train. Don't want to spend too much time on trains as we are there for such a short time.

To get to C/T from Pisa, you take the train north to La Spezia and switch over to a slow local train up the coast to C/T. You can look @ Trenitalia.com to see the schedules. You can also use Mapquest.com to see the road maps in great detail. It's relatively inexpensive and a direct train trip. You can fit C/T in right before you fly home out of Pisa. Lucca would be a great, off the beaten path place to stay a night.

Sandra, How much of a "layover" is there between your arrival in Rome and departure for Genoa? Unless it's a code share flight, you'll likely have to collect your checked luggage and then re-check for the next flight. Although the flight time from FCO to GOA is only about an hours, I suspect the overall travel time might be similar whether you travel by train or air to Genoa. Travel by train may in fact be faster. When you arrive in Genoa, it will take time to collect your luggage, take Shuttle or whatever to the station (possibly Genova Piazza Principe) and then travel by train to whichever of the C.T. villages you'll be staying. Cheers!
