Visiting Brussels.

What is the best/easiest way to get from Brussels Midi station into the central station area of Brussels? We have a few hours to sight see. We will need to return to Brussels Midi to catch a later train. Thanks

A poster at Yahoo! Answers tells you how to navigate the between the two stations by hopping on a local train.

The link to Yahoo Answers is over three years old, and wrong/outdated. If you are arriving to Brussels Midi via IC train/Thalys/Eurostar that ticket is also valid to get you to Central Station (Midi and Central, and all other stations within the city are within the same zone). Many IC trains stop at both stations, with Thalys and Eurostar you have to transfer to another train; there are connections every five minutes or so.

If you're coming from somewhere else on Belgian rail, just stay on the train until it reaches Centraal Station (this won't affect the price of your ticket). Otherwise, you can take the Metro, which surprisingly, is not as straight forwards as it should be. I don't have a Metro map readily available, but as I recall, it involves at least one change onto an underground tram line.

You have two choices - either get a railway train from Midi to Centrale station (which as other people have said will be free if you have a Belgian rail, Eurostar or Thalys ticket), or get the metro (actually a tram running in an underground subway) to either of the Bourse or De Brouckere stations. The metro means you need to get an extra ticket, but will drop you closer to the Grand Place and around. Gare Centrale is closer to the national art galleries and the surrounding area.
