Trenitalia seems to be running a train from Villach to Venice again (I see in the recent past you had to take the bus) but I cannot figure out how to purchase the train ticket (EC 31) . I am trying to travel from Salzburg to Venice. I can buy a ticket as far as Villach on DB Bahn or OBB but no further. I can buy an eticket from Villach to Venice on Trenitalia, but you must pick it up before boarding by printing it out at a machine in Italy. Anyone have any ideas?
Hi
I just purchased tickets from Villach to Venice using the link on the right of the travel forum page - the one for purchasing tickets. It worked fine.
The Austrian Rail website gives you this message if you try to purchase Salzburg (O8:12) to Venice online from their website.
"It is not possible to purchase a ticket online for the section of your journey „Villach Hbf - Venezia Santa Lucia“. Please acquire the ticket separately. Kindly note that this will cause additional costs for your journey. Please contact our ÖBB Customer Service on +43 (0)5-17 17."
Note: Rail Europe sells a non-exchangeable ticket with limited refundability for 34€. Emoore1, is that what you found?
Thank you emoore1. I used the Rick Steves Rail Europe site to purchase the Villach to Venice ticket. I was more than willing to pay the delivery fee for the paper tickets since I had already purchased 5 "Sparpreis" non-refundable tickets from Salzburg to Villach. I was worried I was going to have to wait 2 hours for the next bus out of Villach. Still ended up much cheaper (~$30-50 less / ticket) and faster (1.25 hr) than going via Innsbruck, though not as pretty.
Sounds like you're set. Another option would be to buy it in a train station in Austria or Germany on an earlier day.
