What is the best way to get from Vienna to Venice? Also we will be going to Vienna from London. What is the best and most scenic way to get there? How many days should we spend in Vienna?
Thank you
Florence, from Vienna to Venice, there are several train runs a day. Some runs go from Vienna to Venezia-Santa Lucia and some runs go to Villach, Austria where you get on a bus that goes to the Tronchetto at Venice. These journeys take 8.0hrs-10.5hrs depending on the run. There is one popular night train run that departs Viena at 20:48 and arrives Venezia-Santa Lucia at 08:33. Trip takes 11hrs45min with no train changes. You really need to book the night train 90 days in advance. All this can be done on the Austrian train website (www.oebb.at). Or, you can fly Air Berlin or Lufthansa to Venice Marco Polo from Vienna. I don't see any direct flight. 3.0-5.0hrs for the flights depending on the airline and plane transfers. For Vienna to London, I suggest flying. Nothing scenic to me about 14.0-16.0hr runs that take you into Brussels or Paris and then by the Eurostar tunnel to London. I can see a British Airways 90 minute non-stop flight from Vienna to Heathrow for $113. Wow!. Easyjet makes this flight to London Gatwick for $135.
Hi, How about at least 4 full days in Vienna? That's what I would suggest as a minimum. Going from Vienna to London by train is what I did last summer. I don't recommend it unless you plan on breaking up the ride. By train (day) take the early ICE Wien Westbahnhof to Frankfurt Hbf. Take the last ICE to Paris Est, arrives a few mins before 2200. Stay a night or two in Paris, then go by EuroStar. I broke it up by staying in Munich and Paris.
Thank you for the info. I must have asked the wrong question.we would train from London to Vienna. Then somehow get to Venice and from there fly back to London. Any suggestions on that plan? Thanks
Flo
Hi, As pointed out from London to Vienna you can choose the flying option. Going by train I would still break up the ride. After you arrive in Paris by EuroStar, stay a night or two. Then take the early dep (ca 0706) ICE train Paris Est-Frankfurt Hbf. That gives you an hour for lunch at the Hbf. Then take the ICE Frankfurt-Wien Westbahnhof, which arr. ca a bit after 1900. Another option: If you rather do one leg on the CNL night train, then I suggest this: Paris Est to Munich Hbf., on the following morning in Munich, take the next Railjet train to Wien West. You'll be in Vienna before noon.
