Vienna to Melk options

We would like to visit the Melk abbey and apparently there are several ways to get there (without a car, which we won't have). In looking at our options, it looks like we could take the train to Krems and then take the boat to Melk? Instead of doing the boat both ways, we would like to take the boat one way and the train back to Vienna as we want to do this as a day trip. Has anyone done this and how did it work out?

I just asked a similar question - OBB has a kombiticket that includes the train and boat, with stops in Melk and Krems, but I don’t know how it works.

Tammy, keep in mind that this was back in 2010, but what I did was take the train to Krems and then on to Melk, where I explored Melk Abbey and the town and everything there. It's a really interesting place, and I absolutely love Melk Abbey.

After that, I joined up with a few other people I had met on the train, and we headed over to buy tickets to a boat cruise that went back down (up?) the Danube to Durnstein. This was the company we used: https://ddsg-blue-danube.at/?lang=en

I'm sure things are different now but back then we bought the ticket for the boat, and then waited for the boat to come. Once it came, we boarded it and then spent a lovely hour or so along the Danube looking at the castles and the ruins and everything. It was a wonderful ride.

The boat \dropped us off in Durnstein, which is a do-not-miss location, in my opinion. It is one of the most beautiful villages I've ever been in, and I just loved it. I was there in September, and and wandered through the village. Later, my new friends and I met up at a local Heuriger to enjoy some of Vienna's wonderful white wines, including Gruner Veltliner, which was in season then. It was such a wonderful day. After that, I took the train back to Krems and then transferred back to Vienna.
