I would do Vienna to Krakow, mainly because you could squeeze Prague in between, and give these guys the opportunity to "taste(assuming they are 16+)what a real beer tastes like.
Once in Krakow, you'll be shopping for goodies in the cloth market while they'll be ready to see the salt mines and the camps.
I'll be in Krakow 20-23 May and can't wait to get back--it's still not discovered by anyone outside of the EU other than Polish Americans.

We took the Krakow to Berlin train last summer (it takes 10 hours, be warned:) I would have preferred to go through Austria but the pass we purchased was Germany-Poland. My travel companion didn't want to spring for the supplement (college students,go figure.) It was a pleasant but extremely dull journey.
I love, love, loved Krakow!

I took the train to Krakow from Vienna last year at this time. The train took about 4.5 hrs to Katovice and then you changed trains, another 35 minutes? to Krakow. I went to a cabin and pointed at my ticket to another couple who spoke English and were going to Krakow as well. When you get dropped off at the train station, you can walk to any of the hotels. I stayed in the Holiday Inn Express and it was about two blocks walk.
Auschwitz is very powerful and very well organized for a visit.

Jessica,

I have taken the Krakow to Berlin Bahnhof Zoo route, (day time); as pointed out above, it was over nine hours for sure. This was back in 2001, and yes, be prepared for a long haul. The most interesting part is that the route goes the famous towns in Upper Silesia at Kattowitz to Lower Silesia at Wroclaw (Breslau)...very lovely countryside in Lower Silesia (Niederschlesien).
