Any tips or routes info for driving out of Vienna, going toward Bavaria. On May 4th, we are renting a car in Vienna, and heading towards Bavaria: Reutte or Fussen. Spending 3 nights there, and then driving up the romantic road to Rothenburg, to spend the night. Our last full day in Europe we will head back to Munich and spend the night for an early flight out. What would be the best route, and what sights should we see on the way? Also is 3 nights in Reutte/Fussen too much? We were planning on seeing the castles, and maybe day-tripping to Switzerland. Would 2 nights be better, and spend more time along Romantic Road?
If you plan on spending 3 nights in the Alps, there are better places to stay than Reutte or Fussen, such as Mittenwald, Oberammergau, or my favorite, Garmisch-Partenkirchen. All of these towns are within easy driving distance of each other. Fussen is to Schwangau what Kissemee is to Disney World- convenient location, but it would never be a destination in its own right without Ludwig's castles down the road. Reutte is quaint, but not a whole lot more to do there. The castles take about half a day to tour, so you may want to consider another location with more activities for the rest of your time. Or, you could give Berchtesgaden a look on your way from Vienna, if you prefer.
