Vienna Ringstrasse Tram Tour-RS Pocket Vienna

I was just reading about the Ringstrasse tram circular tour in RS Pocket Vienna and it says, "a single ticket covers the entire trip, including the transfer". So I went to the Vienna City web site to check the different ticket prices and I came across this information concerning a single ticket: "Valid for one journey within one zone. You can change as often as is necessary, but you may not travel on a circular route or go back to your starting point. Costs €2.60 if bought on a tram. If that information is correct it appears that a person might be subjected to a fine for using a single ticket to travel the Ringstrasse circular tour.

The reference may be to the "all you can ride" tickets available in 24-, 48- and 72-hour versions:

The ticket offers you free travel on Vienna's public transport for 24, 48 or 72 hours from validation. It is valid on all public transport services in the core zone of Vienna.

I was in Vienna longer and used the weekly pass, an "all you can ride" option for travel Monday to Monday:

Yes, of course, with the 24, 48, or 72 hour ticket you are allowed to hop on and hop off in any direction so does not apply to what I was referring to. i am quoting the rule for a single use ticket purchased for a single trip from a machine or from the driver. According to the information in the RS Pocket Vienna the single trip ticket purchased from a machine or the driver can be used for the circular Ringstrasse Tour. The ticket is good for the transfer from tram #2 to tram #1 on the Ringstrasse; however, according to the rules for use of that ticket on the Vienna Metro web site it can not be used for a circular trip or one returning to the the original beginning point.

Question about the weekly pass: If the pass is purchased on Tuesday or Wednesday is it valid until the following Monday or would the ticket validity begin on the Monday following the day of purchase if purchased during the week? It is the same price as the 72 hour pass so would be a good choice for travel from 12:00(noon) on Wednesday for example until Sat. night at 21:30.

You can buy the weekly passes " a maximum of 60 days before validity date." If you buy the ticket online (same site as linked above) you specify a "valid from" date which will be the Monday from which it is valid - regardless of which days during its validity that you actually use it.

So to your point, yes the weekly pass is a good deal for travel of more than 72 hours - even if you're not using it for an entire week - within a selected Monday to Monday timeframe. I used mine from Tuesday to Saturday, as I recall.

I just checked the www online shop. Right now, you can only purchase a ticket for validity starting this coming Monday. If you plan to buy your ticket online, you'd want to be sure to buy it at least the week prior as you may not be able to buy online for the current week (I have only verified that today, a Saturday - I haven't verified whether you could buy a ticket for "this week" on, say, a Tuesday.)

I did just confirm that I bought my weekly pass on a Wednesday for use during that current week - so apparently I used it from Wednesday to Saturday. I can't tell (and can't remember) whether I bought the ticket in the app or, more likely, at a ticket kiosk in a station.

You can also download the app to buy tickets:

Good information, thanks. Will probably wait to buy the week pass when we arrive in Vienna since we will be traveling in other parts of Europe for 1`0 days before arriving in Vienna.

And people over 63 can buy 2-for-1 transit tickets -- 2 rides for one person or one ride for two traveling together.
