My way (cheap), S bahn to Landstrasse. the U bahn to Karlsplatz.

Yes, cheapest (4 Euro/person) is by train and then subway. Specifically, the S7 train to Landstrasse/Wien Mitte (not the CAT, City Airport Train! too expensive). Then switch to the U4 subway line (well marked) taking it in the direction of Hutteldorf, exiting the subway at Karlplatz. Follow the exit signs marked "Oper." Most convenient way is a taxi. I recommend red cab, which should be booked online, at least 24 hours in advance. Cost is 29 Euro, which you pre-pay with credit card. Website, available in English: http://red-cab.at/
