Can anyone tell me how accurate the michelin trip directions are. I was looking at a couple of trips we are thinking of driving and it seems like it should take longer than the estimated times they say. Can anyone attest to their accuracy. Any other trip planning sites out there for driving? Thanks.
I know from personal experience that viamichelin's time estimates for Ireland need to be increased by nearly 50%. I can't speak for how accurate the site is for other countries.
Another good driving site is www.mappy.com.
Mapquest has the major European countries. The mileage is fairly accurate and they seem to use an average of 65 mph on the 4 lanes and 45 mph on 2 lane roads. It could depend on the time of year and which days of the week you travel. The UK and Ireland have much narrower roads than the continent which makes for slower driving, and congestion is really a big problem in many areas. You can go 100 mph on some German autobahns, and others, like between Munich & Salzburg, the traffic is sometimes so thick you're lucky to average 50. Give us the actual driving trips you are planning and someone out there can probably give you a more specific answer.
OK, here's the route: Munich - Venice - Lucca - CT - Munich. Thanks for all the input.
We've found that the viamichelin maps are great as far as the directions but we've never made it from point A to point B in the amount of time they estimate. It's always taken much longer.
I've been using viamichelin for years now for trip planning purposes. I can't really say whether their drive times are completely accurate as we are alwasy stopping for lunch, sightseeing, etc. I can say that I make our itinerary around their estimated drive times and we've never arrived SO late to a destination that the times must have been completely off. I try to make the longest drive day no more than 6 hours with most stops being between 2-4 hours away with something to see along the way.
We also use viamichelin. Others are mappy and AA, the British AAA.
