Venice to Tirano trains

Wanting to take advantage of some mini fares and our trip from Venice to Tirano will be 4 months out from this week..I can find a schedule from Venice to Milan but it keeps telling me there is not a schedule for Milan to Tirano, even for tomorrow..this is on the trenitalia...what am I doing wrong? We need to be in Tirano early enough to take the Bernina Express and that will be our first ride with the Swiss pass

Vikki, you might want to re-title your thread with Tirano in the title. Some of the websites do not recognize Tirano, and apparently Trenitalia is one of them. I have seen posts here that explain how to find the schedule. If you put Tirano in your title maybe it will attract the attention of people who know the solution.

Start here: Seat61 By using the Trenord site, I found the schedule...there are no reservations available for this leg of the trip; the cost is 9,85 euro (2nd) or 14,80 euro (1st). Sometimes train sites are out-to-lunch... (don't forget to try 'Milano', too!)

Hi Vikki. There is a fluke in the trenitalia web site that it doesn't show trains to Tirano. But the sched is shown on swiss site www.sbb.ch. This is a regional train, so do NOT buy tix in advance, just buy when in Italy. Unfortunately your only option may be the 6:20 am train arrive Tirano 8:50. There is a train arrives at 12:50, but regional trains are often late, not sure what time your BE train leaves Tirano.
Enjoy your trip!

Thanks Bob... have not seen the train you are referring to on any schedule...we will be traveling from Venice that morning with the goal of being in Tirano in time for the 2 pm Bernina Express..we were planning on leaving I believe around 6:30 am to Milan and there is a train from Milan to Tirano that would put us there a around 12:30...These train websites are all so confusing...this is the only "Have to nail down" schedule we are worried about as there is only one Bernina Express a day..guess we will just wait and buy once there..so different than the US where you HAVE to plan and buy so far ahead...

According to the Swiss Rail site, there is a regional train that leaves Milano Centrale at 10:20 and arrives in Tirano at 12:50. For reasons unknown, that train doesn't appear on the usually reliable German Rail site either. That site shows a very roundabout route with four connections (one leg on a bus) and a total trip time of just over eight hours!

We are wanting the train that leaves at 10:20 but don't know how to buy it..guess we will wait until we get there..I understand sub charges a lot for shipping..any other suggestion? What are the disadvantages of buying tickets from the Italian train site for legs of our travel that we can find?

The advantage of booking high-speed trains ASAP (up to 120 days allowed) on the Trenitalia site is that you can get a MINI fare as low as €9.00. The disadvantage is that there are limitations on exchanging MINI fare tickets. Here is a quote from the Trenitalia site: "All MINI tickets, including tickets purchased online and with ticketless option, can be changed solely at ticket desks at train stations or at the travel agency where the ticket was issued up to midnight of the day before departure. Changes can be made only once. You are only allowed to change the departure date or time for the same category of train or service, subject to a change fee (equal to the difference to the corresponding full base price)."
