Venice to Slovenia then Croatia

We will be traveling from Venice to Slovenia and then down to Croatia in May 2011. I am trying to figure out the best routing. Shall we A) Rent a car in Venice and drive to Slovenia and then to drop it off in Croatia (can't find anyone who will do this) or B) Take a train from Venice to Slovenia. It looks like their used to be a direct link, but now it may only overnight? I also saw some folks taking trains from Venice to Austria and then to Slovenia. Then we could train from Slovenia to Croatia and rent a car just in Croatia C) take a ferry from Venice to Rovinj (Croatia) and then hire a care in Croatia drive up to Slovenia and back into Croatia. Problem is that I'm can't find a schedule of ferries for May 2011 from Venice to Rovinj Help!
thanks!

Most car rental companies won't let you take a car from Italy into Croatia, so options B and C are better. I like C. According to the Venezia Lines website, service from Venice to Istria (including Rovinj) will start April 16. They don't have online booking yet, and aren't showing the schedules, but they do show the price. http://www.venezialines.com/
