Venice to Slovenia

Any advice on the best way to travel from Venice to Slovenia (Ljubljana)? Is there a train and if so, how convenient is it and what would the approximate cost be? Thanks

train is pretty easy from venice to lubjana. or, you can go to piran or coper by boat. from there to lubjana is about 3 hrs by bus. i enjoyed piran and koper more than lju - it's very small not worth an overnight, but if you want to go to other eastern European countries, and you have seen plenty Venusian towns, then just take a train to LJU directly.

Thanks David. The reason for the trip to LJU is to go skiing. Will be there in January.

All passenger rail services between Slovenia in Italy will cease to exist as of Dec. 12th, 2011

To Rima of Cincinnatti, If you have not booked your flight yet, you might also consider Vienna along with Venice. Both should have train service of about equal time and cost. The link RS offers for Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) seems about as friendly as any. To Andre L of Tilburg, I have seen nothing on the few web sites I have visited that rail service is ending. Where can I find facts about the possible connections during next September and October, when I plan to be there?

You can take a well-appointed coach (highway bus) operated by Austrian Rail from Venice to Villach and a train operated by Austrian Rail from there to Ljubljana. If you book each leg separately well in advance on the Austrian Rail site, you can get a discount fare as low as €19 for each leg.

It has been noticed on Italian press. You an also check by yourself trying to find trains between Trieste, Udine and any possible city in Slovenia and see there are, as from today, no longer train connections there

We just returned from Europe and travelled from Lake Bled to Venice on Nov. 20. We took a train to Villach then the express bus from Villach to Venice. We left Lake bled at 9:50 and were in Venice at 14:20. The cost was minimal. The time factor was what determined our choice. I know they go from Venice to Villach. Another reader told me about it. From Villach to Ljubljana should be a snap.
