I can't make the Trenatlia train site display prices...but I am finding a price of 70 euros per person for a second class train trip from Venice to Rome as Rail Europe, which I know is pricier than other sites. Does anyone have any accurate information? I really don't want to spend that much for a day trip into Venice...
Norm is correct. The Trenitalia website shows 56.10euro standard fare for second class one way (112.20euro round trip). Norm is also correct that it's a 4.25hr journey each way.
You could leave very early in the morning and return late in the evening if you really want a day trip to Rome. You might have 6-7 hours of daylight and touring but... I'm sure you know the downsides of a very short visit to a popular tourist city.
I'll assume you really don't mean you're going to Rome from Venice for only a day...leaving in the morning and returning the same night! The fastest train journey is 4 1/2 hours each way! Assuming you don't, then....Trenitalia will show NO through the buy on line areas if you are booking more than 60 days in advance...that's the maximum allowable advance time Trenitalia will allow. Simply input a phantom date (use the same day of the week you plan to travel) to get an idea as to prices. I show prices around 56 Euro standard fare, second class....45 Euro with their discount "Amica" fare. If you want to actually purchase on Trenitalia, register NOW, then book when the window opens. Many people have reported problems when they try to register as they are going thru the booking procedure.
Regardless of the cost. Go. You will not be disapointed. Once you leave the terminal and walk to the exit, you jaw will drop once you see the Grand Canal. Take the boatbus which is not more than 15 feet on the left from the exit. Take it to St Marks, walk around, eat lunch, and return. 3-4 hours in Venice is enough for the first time. It will be a long day, but well worth it. Sleep on the train if you must. You will be back in Rome by midnight.
I'm doing my 1st 3 days in Venice and taking the train on a sunday to rome and staying until we depart friday ....How easy is the station to find in Venice and what's the trip time ? Are there non-stops from Venice to Rome ? What about the seat class difference ..what's the deal between 1st and 2nd ?
Thanks
Partick, the Venezia Santa Lucia train station is on the Grand Canal. If you take a Vaporetto (water bus), it's the Ferrovia stop. You won't miss it. Just make sure that you leave your hotel early enough to take the slow vaporetto to the train station (usually about 15-20 minutes).
The trip to Rome from Venice will take about 4.25hrs if you get the runs that don't require a train change. There are no non-stops. However, 5 stops, including Mestre, Padua, Bologna and Florence are not bad. As for 1st class vs 2nd class, 2nd class is great on the Eurostar. You can bring on your own food. 2nd class is 24euro cheaper.
