Venice to Munich on sleeper train

Hi! We are wanting to get from Venice to Munich on a sleeper train on May 27 (two women and one man). I would prefer to have the nicest accommodation possible, with a private shower, but I can't figure out what to book -- couchette, compartment, vagone letto deluxe t3?? We would also prefer to stay in the same compartment, as we're family. Can anyone guide me on this with the Trenitalia website? Thanks!

What you want is vagone letto deluxe t3 and the standard fare is €175.00/person. No discount fare is offered. If you're willing to do without the shower but still have a 3-bed sleeper, choose "3 bed compartment." The standard fare is €130.00/person. The Smart 2 fare is €89.00/person. The Smart fare is €69.00/person. Whichever type of 3-bed sleeper you pick, choose to book the entire compartment.

It might be easier to book it on bahn.de in English, although they are showing the price for the "deluxe 3-person compartment) that date as 599,40 euro.

I did see that it appears to be available on bahn.de although much more expensive than on Trenitalia, even if it was available. I can't decide if a shower in the compartment is worth the extra 200 Euros - book the entire 4 berth couchette or the deluxe? I have HORRID bed head in the mornings, although I wouldn't be opposed to a baby-wipe shower/leg shave to get me through. Also, if the train arrives in Munich at around 0630 and we aren't able to check into our apartment at Hotel Adagio Muenchen city until 1500, what do we do with ourselves (and our luggage) all day??? I've emailed the hotel to ask if we can check in early or if they can hold our luggage, but I doubt either will happen. Thoughts??

Another question - if I book on bahn.de, it says the only option is for the tickets to be delivered by MAIL!! We are leaving the country in 10 days and I'm afraid they wouldn't get them to us before then. Is there any way for us to also pick them up at the station??? That makes me nervous.

You don't have to book all the bunks in a 4-person couchette to have the compartment to yourselves. Book a three-bed sleeper. You'll save money by booking on the Trenitalia site. (See my previous post.) The Smart fare of €69.00 was still available a moment ago for 27 May. Choose the "self service" option for retrieving your tickets and pick them up at the station in Venice. There is an English option, but the site currently is having some "issues" and doesn't always recognize the name of a station when you enter it. Try entering Venezia S. Lucia as your departure station and Muenchen hbf as your arrival station. You can use the left luggage facilities at the Munich train station. Go exploring until it's time to check in at your apartment. There probably are public showers at the station. If Lee from Colorado reads this thread, he'll give you accurate information.

Tim, when I try to book the Vagone letto deluxe t3 with the entire compartment (so nobody else will take the 4th bunk) on the Trenitalia website, it tells me no seats are available for that. We would prefer to not be in separate compartments, since we're two females and one male (one female is my elderly mother). So I guess my only options are to book on Bahn.de in a second class compartment (without a shower, and then we shower in the Munich train station) OR book on RailEurope and us just have two separate compartments and pay an outrageous fee, so I can guarantee that we get our tickets in time. This was supposed to be easy but it hasn't turned out to be so!!

Celeste, A Vagone letto deluxe t3 only has three beds. Couchettes have either four or six bunks. It looks like both the deluxe 3-bed sleepers and the regular 3-bed sleepers are now sold out. I just tried a dummy booking for all four bunks in a 4-person couchette and could have gotten a Smart fare of €236.00 (€59.00/bunk).

: Even though it showed the compartments to be available, RailEurope finally was able to tell me that they book up 6-9 months in advance. We were very lucky to even get into the 6-person couchettes. At least we're on the train, and it is about $400 USD cheaper than the 3-person compartments would have been. Now to just get locks for luggage, etc.

The person you talked to at Rail Europe doesn't have a clue. While it's not unusual for night trains to sell out weeks in advance (especially the 1-, 2-, and 3-bed sleepers), both Trenitalia and the Bahn don't even sell tickets for this train more than three months in advance. However, I'm happy that you suceeded in booking any kind of tickets.

I wondered about that, Tim, since it appeared that it would let me book some of the options directly on the websites. I was willing to book on either Trenitalia or Bahn, but they wouldn't deliver tickets electronically and I couldn't take the risk that they wouldn't get here in time (like next week). And I couldn't get any help from either in English to ask questions, so I just went to RailEurope. I know I paid a little more than I should, but at least I will get there and can proceed with a car rental reservation that I need.

As I said in a previous post, if you had booked on the Trenitalia site you could have chosen to pick up your tickets at the station in Venice. But all's well that ends well.
