Venice to Cinque Terre. What train route?

We are traveling from Venice to Cinque Terre (Vernazza) late in June. First question, what is the best and fastest route? I can't seem to get much info on the rail sites, and what info I do get, doesn't have any information about morning trains, only afternoon ones. Second question, if I buy a 36 hour pass for the Venice vaporetto boats and take 2 medium sized travel bags on board, will they charge me a fare for the second bag? Thanks.

David, When I was planning my husband's and my trip to Italy in 2007, I booked the B&B's first then started looking at the train schedules. We first were going to go Rome, Florence, Venice, CT then Tuscany area with a car.
I found it difficult and a very long day to go from Venice to CT via train. There was one or two train changes and it was about a 6-8 hour day. I changed our itinerary to go Rome, Venice, Florence, CT then picked up a rental car in La Spezia. We based out of Orvieto to tour the Tuscany/Umbria area then dropped the car off in Orvieto and took the train back to Rome. It worked much better than trying to go from Venice to CT. I did not see anyone being charged with extra bags. Can you pare down your luggage?

There are several morning routes. The fastest takes 6 1/2 hours. The reason you can't see them is that you are looking too far ahead. New timetables will go into effect in mid June and not all routes have been loaded yet. Go to either www.bahn.de or www.trenitalia.com. Enter a dummy date toward the end of May for the day of the week you wish to travel. The timetables you get should be nearly identical to the new ones. The Trenitalia site will also give you the fares.

Many thanks to all for the info. It looks like it will take far longer than I thought... but hey, I'll be looking out the window at Italy!
