Twenty three and a half minutes.

Ok, that's sarcasm.

Customs shouldn't take any time if you have nothing to declare. It's usually just a walkthrough.

If you are coming from outside of Schengen, how long immigration will take is anyone's guess. It depends on how many other flights are arriving at the same time, how long it will take to register for EES if you havn't registered in the past, etc.

Where are you flying in from? Will you have checked luggage.

Based on other posts here, I really don't think you need to pre-book a water taxi. I think you can arrange that after you've completed all the airport formalities.

EES is the Electronic Entry System that is being implemented, it uses kiosks like you may have used other places. You will answer a few questions, get your picture taken, one hand, or two, scanned for fingerprints, and on your way. Nothing to do ahead of time (In the future ETIAS will be implemented, that will require advanced action)

What you do not mention, is if Venice is your first stop in the Schengen Zone (basically continental Europe). If you stop first in Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, or other cities, you will do immigration there, not in Venice.

It is possible that ETIAS will be implemented in October, as tentatively it is to go in effect in the 4th quarter of 2026. The ETIAS must be completed before you travel. It will be a pre-entry requirement for visa-free entry to Schengen countries.

There are currently no non-stop flights from Phoenix to Venice. Where are you connecting?

Also, October is a long way off. You may have a schedule change or 2.

Ohh yes we have a layover at London Heathrow
So will that be where we go through customs? Or will we go through customs at heathrow? And again in venice?

If you are on a single ticket (booked together) from the US to Venice with a Heathrow (LHR) layover, you generally do not need to go through UK passport control/immigration. You will stay "airside" in the international transit area, follow "Flight Connections" signs, and go through a security screening. You will have to go through passport control at Venice Airport as for you it's Venice is first port of entry from non-Schengen zone into Schengen zone.

Quote from Google search:
Venice water buses (vaporetti) operate regularly until approximately 11:00 PM to 11:30 PM, after which specialized "N" night lines take over, running every 30-60 minutes until 4:00 AM or 5:00 AM. Key routes, such as Line 1 along the Grand Canal, run until around 11:30 PM, providing consistent service for most of the night.

Let's get the wording correct customs.... and immigration are two different things.

Customs is for your stuff. It's what you may have to declare if you are asked. Most likely it's just a walkthrough the green archway saying "Nothing to Declare."

Immigration/Passport Control is for you. It's where you show your passport and get admitted into the country.

Since you are connecting in London, you won't go through immigration or customs there. You will follow the purple Flight Connections signs. You will have to know which terminals you will be using. If you are not sure, tell us your airlines and flight numbers and we can help you with terminals.

When you arrive in Venice, you will go through immigration and customs. If it's the first time you are entering Schengen since the implementation of EES then you will have to register. There is nothing you can do ahead of time.

How long that will take is anyone's guess.
