Hello, I'm arriving in venice and staying near St marc square area. Can you recommend what's the best way for me to get from the airport to the hotel? Do I take a taxi to the canal? And transfer to a vaporetto? I'm looking for an economical option?
Kira: If you search you will find this has been answered frequently. There arae a numbr of ways of doing it. The way I have done it and would do it again is take the bus from the airpport to Pizzale Roma and a vaporetto to St. M. Sq. It is cheap and easy. Others have different ideas and they may suit you better. Make sure you get explicit directions to your hotel. Addresses in Venice are not logical and it may be through an alley across a square and rond a corner from the street adress you get. Ours was easier to approach from a totally different direction than the street adress would lead you to believe.
Thank you for your reply. I tried searching and couldn't find earlier , must of no searched hard enough. I am worried about the addresses and trying to find the hotel and lugging around suitcases thru the streets. I'm going solo so was trying to see what my easier options are.
Hi Kira: You possibly did not find other answers as they are probably in the To The Boot section on Italy. Re: getting to your hotel - does it have a web site? If so, see if it gives you directions. If not, contact the hotel and ask them for directions from wherever you plan to start walking. When you get there, you will find some of the "streets" are so narrow you will hardly be able to pass someone if they are also pulling a suitcase - hard to beilieve, but true! We followed the directions on our hotel website and my sister was so convinced I was wrong she stopped at a store to confirm we were on the right track (we were). Have a great trip. Venice is like nowhere else. While it is not my favourite place, I am sure glad I have been there and I know others who go there almost every year.
Thanks again for the suggestion! I actually did just that, printed the directions from the hotel website. It told me to take the water bus transport. I went to that website to check out the options. It's seems the least expensive way, $13 euro. I'm staying nears St marks square. It looks like a 10 min walk from the stop. I'm also going to Florence and Rome later in the trip! So excited I can't even sleep!
Iain gave some good advice. We opted to take the Alilaguna or water bus. To St Marks, square. But it's slow. Took about and hour and a half, not including the wait at the airport dock. If your hotel has it's own dock, you can take a water taxi from the airport. But that's about 100E. We stayed at the Colombina. For us it was through the bell tower. 1st right. Last ally to the left. 1st ally to the right. Over the bridge. The street in front of the hotel was about 4 feet wide. Some were narrower. My wife got frustrated because we couldn't find a street on the left. I kept saying, I think that ally is a street. It was. And every now and then the street is a narrow passageway through a building. I love Venice. After Paris it's my favorite. Have fun.
