How long does it take to get from the airport to the train station by bus and water taxi? Also, how long would it take for me to walk from the train station to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum, or should I take a water taxi?
The bus from the airport takes about 20 minutes to go to the Piazzale Roma which is near, but not at, the train station. The same vaporetto lines run from Piazzale Roma (about 5 minutes) and on to the Accademia Bridge from where you can walk to the Peggy. The number 2 vaporetto would take about 15 minutes to get you there from the train station.
Water taxis are very expensive and are only used by those with money to burn. The land access from the airport is quite easy.
Karen - Go to the D2 bus stop to go to Piazzale Roma. And you can walk to the Peggy Guggenheim museum from Piazzale Roma - you can walk to anywhere in Venice - in about half an hour. But the vaporetto runs from there to the Accademia Bridge as well. The number 2 (formerly the 82) is faster than the number 1.
Private water taxis from the airport to Venice cost about 100 Euro, not dollars. So that's currently about 140 dollars. For me, that's another night in Venice. That's why I recommend the bus.
Doug, can you tell me which bus I should take from the Airport to Piazzale Roma an can I walk from the Piazzale Roma to the Peggy museum?
Hi Karen - Water taxis are not only used by people with "money to burn" They are also used by people who love the experience of Venice and taking a private water taxi to the airport. It's about $100 US and if you're in Venice - One of Europe's most expensive cities- why not do it right !!!!!!!
I guess you could also swim to the airport with a rope around your neck, towing your luggage and tied to your body like several of the "experts" here do, BUT I don't think you would be sorry for taking a beautiful ride in your private water taxi!!
Ciao, Greg
You can take the Orange Line Alilaguna water bus from the airport to the station - takes about half an hour and costs 13 Euro. Other lines take longer - I had a very useful orientation to Venice because I took the one that stopped at Murano, Lido and San Marco, then took the #1 up the Grand Canal to my hotel near the station. The only way to arrive in Venice is via water!
Be aware that the water taxis and Aliaguna go from the same dock about 10 mins walk from the airport. Make sure you get the Alilaguna boat, not the water taxi. I think Ali Laguna boats run every half hour. Check their web site for info (www.alilaguna.it)
If you plan on walking to Guggenheim from station make sure you get a really good map of Venice - its a relatively easy walking city but also very confusing. If time is an issue, I'd take the Vaparetto (#1, stops everywhere or #82 quicker, but make sure it goes beyond the Rialto) from the Station to Accademia and then a short walk from there. Vaparettos cost 5 Euro one way.
I agree you should approach venice by water, especially the first time you arrive, it's magical.
I've done it several times, always on the Orange line Alilagona water bus for 13 euros.
You can buy the tickets right there in the airport when you arrive. Unless they moved it 9or my memory is playing games), the kiosk is to the left when you get through arrivals.
Agree, you should certainly spend some time on the water in Venice, so either take the Alilaguna from the airport, or the bus from airport to Piazzale Roma then transfer to a vaporetto, and enjoy the scenic trip down the Grand Canal as you head towards the Accademia stop.
While it's possible to walk from Piazzale Roma to the Peggy Guggenheim, it can be challenging with luggage because of the several bridges you must cross. It would be realistic with a back pack, but allow 45 minutes as you'll likely take at least one wrong turn along the way (one of the serendipity charms of Venice when not carrying luggage).
We need to get from Marco Polo Airport (8:30 am) to the Ferry Port (to Corfu), (leaves at 12:00 noon) What is the quickest and/or surest way to make it?
Thanks,
Joann
