We are staying in Varenna for 5 nights in May. Thought we
might take a day trip to St. Moritz via the Bernina Express from Tirano. Has anyone traveled this route?

I actually did the reverse, St Moritz to Varenna. The italian portion is not very interesting but the Swiss route is to ST Moritz. It is a long day with a layover in Tirano to chg trains. Suggest you stay at least 1 night in nearby lovely, tranquil Pontresina, a 10 min from S. Moritz (walk around next day)and lodging alot less.
