I want to get from Varenna to Castelrotto. In his book on Italy, RS seems to indicate that one can only arrive in Castelrotto by bus as he only mentions arrival by bus or car. The Italian train map seems to indicate a route from Varenna to Milan to Verona to Bolzano. There seems to be a bus connection from Bolzano to Castelrotto. Have I got this figured out correctly?
George,
The trip from Varenna to Castelrotto is fairly easy. This is the route you'll need to take.....
- Train from Varenna to Milano Centrale
- Train from Milano to Bolzano (probably with a change at Verona P.N.)
- Bus from Bolzano to Castelrotto
The Bus station in Bolzano is about a block from the rail station. As I recall, turn left as you exit the station. There are two larger streets in a "Y" formation. Take the one on the left, Viale della Stazione and then proceed past the bicycles and along the tree lined street, about two long blocks. My memory is a bit foggy after that but I believe you'll take a right to Piazza Walther to find the Bus station. The ride to Castelrotto is about an hour. The Bus will make a couple of stops before reaching the centre of Castelrotto, so be sure not to disembark too early.
Hello George,
As Ken says it’s an easy trip. Bus or car is the only way to get there.
At Bolzano, you can walk to the bus depot or an alternate option is walk out the main door of the train station and turn right, stay on that side of the road for about 100 meters or so, past the taxis and you’ll get to the bus stop to Castelrotto. Pay as you get on – I think it’s less than 5 euro a trip.
The bus stop when you return from Castelrotto is on the other side of the street and near the pedestrian crossing to the train station – not as far to walk.
You’ll need to catch the 170 bus – this is the link to the bus timetables - http://www.sii.bz.it/en/siipdftimetables
scroll down the page to the 170 (ORTISEI-CASTELROTTO-BOLZANO) and print it out –note the time table is good till the 14th June.
The towns are listed in the time table in both Italian and German. The bus drops you at a bus station near the main square, check your progress against the time table so you know when you have arrived.
Since Varenna-Milan schedules are not some train schedule sites, see those at www.trenord.it or check them at the station. They run about every two hours and take one hour.
