Vancouver to Venice - connection question

I'm flying Vancouver to Venice in 2 weeks, with a 1 hour 35 minute layover in Frankfurt. Flying with Lufthansa 493.

Does anyone have experience with this short connection time? I have secured seats as forward as possible with the hopes of aiming for the front of the pack.

What can I expect?

Luggage - does that go straight through to Venice? Or will I need to claim and recheck in Frankfurt?

You probably do passport control in Frankfurt ( never been a problem for me ) and customs at Venice. If you are booked on one ticket, there should be no problem.

mills,

That's probably considered a "legal connection" but it could be "tight" in some cases. I've managed with a connecting time of as short as an hour in Frankfurt, but there will be NO time to spare. If you purchased both flights on a single ticket, your checked luggage should go through to your final destination. If you bought from Lufthansa, you'll likely be using one of their "city hopper" partners to Venice. A few points to keep in mind......

  • it's good to hear that you've booked seating near the front of the plane (Premium Economy, Business Class or at least the front of Economy Class). It will be important to be at the front of the line going through Passport control. If you get stuck behind the other ~300 passengers from your flight, you could miss your connection.
  • you will have to go through security again before boarding your next flight. I've found the security at FRA to be among the fastest and most efficient that I've encountered. If things aren't moving quickly, be sure to mention that you've got a connecting flight. Don't waste ANY time grabbing a coffee or stopping in the WC (use the WC towards the end of the flight from Vancouver).
  • if you can determine what gates are used for your arrival and departing flights, have a look at an airport map to get an idea of the layout.

Buon Viaggio!

If you are carrying on, that would help. I've gone from USA, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and because I was landing in the EU, I had to go through passport control, but not deal with my luggage. I was able to walk directly to my next terminal without going out through "security" to get my luggage.
If you are on one ticket, your luggage will be checked through.
The passport control seems to take the longest anywhere, so if it's efficient, it sounds like you are all set. The advice from the other forum member was excellent.

I flew Vancouver to Venice through Munich about a year and a half ago. I only had an hour to connect, and almost missed my connection due to the unorganized mess at security in Munich. I was also flying with Lufthansa, and in hind sight I should have gone straight to their counter and told them I might not make it through security in time and maybe they could have helped me skip the line. As it was, I had to run, but myself and one other person managed to just make the flight. I only had carry-on luggage. Another person on our tour went through Frankfurt and had the same problem. You have a bit more time so it may be tight, but if the lines at security look really long I would suggest approaching a Lufthansa person and asking for help, or at least tell them you are there.

Make sure you immediately check the info board on landing; and get to your next gate ASAP.
Frankfurt is a huge airport.
Also, as you go thru the airport to your next gate, check every info board along the way, in case there is a gate change at the last minute.
It's happened to me twice.
Then when you are at the gate to go to Venice, if you have time, find the bathroom.
As someone else said, use the loo on board just before landing in Frankfurt, to save time.
Your luggage will go thru to Venice; and if you miss the flight, Lufthansa has to put you on its next one.
Pack a change of clothes in your carry -on in case of delay, lost luggage, etc; then you are all prepared for anything!
Good job booking both with the same airline, a very good plan.
Have fun in Venice!

The other thing to note, should you miss your connection due to a late arriving flight from YVR, Lufthansa has another flight at 16:10, so you will have a back-up.

Thank you everyone. You have all provided me with such EXCELLENT advice.

I have changed our seats to aisle seats so we are positioned to deplane even faster (hopefully).

I feel quite equipped to manage our short connection time.
