Van rental in Ireland

Looking to rent a van in Dublin as we are 7 people traveling or is it better to get 2 cars? Any thoughts on the best company to rent from, great value. Also what do I need to know about car insurance on the rental?

For car rentals, you most likely will have to accept the full CDW on any car or van you rent. You might think that your Visa or Mastercard will cover this and you won't have to accept the CDW. However, I have the Visa documentation that excludes Ireland from their coverage. It's on their website. I believe that Mastercard does the same.

Agree with Larry, credit cards do not cover collision in Ireland.

You're better off with 2 cars. A 7-passenger van isn't going to have much room at all for luggage. You might find a 9-passenger van that would hold everyone and their bags, but I don't think you'd enjoy driving one of those in Irish cities or on their often-narrow country roads.

There are no credit cards whose insurance covers you in Ireland, even if they say they do. I always get the "super" CDW, which brings your deductable to 0 in case of a problem. It is pricey, but well worth the peace of mind. And two cars will definitely be better than a van. Even if you could find a van that would comfortably carry seven people, what about all of the luggage?

I agree about renting 2 cars rather than a van (the roads are very small). Check out this website for wonderful Irish info: irelandyes.com. and check Dan Dooley rental company -it's Irish, and they give you ALL the coasts right up front. A few credit cards DO cover Collision damage insurance in ireland but you have to check carefully to be sure and have printed proof of that with you. All info on Irelandyes.com Julia
