Validating Italy Train Tickets/Seat Reservations

Do I need to validate a seat reservation (paper ticket) if I have a Eurail pass in Italy? I would assume I do not given the Eurail pass is really the "ticket".

Also, on a night train Venice to Budapest - do I have to validate the ticket? (It's one ticket for the sleeper and covers the non-Italy portion of the ticket(Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary) given I have a Eurail pass for Italy.)

Thanks!

Hey Ali,

No, no validation required here so long as your Eurail pass has been validated prior to boarding the train, and if it is a select pass (limited number of days) then make sure the date has been penned in prior to the conductor coming by.

Have you already purchased the sleeper reservation AND the ticket for the non-Italy portion? Just making sure you know those are two separate things. If so, just give them both to the conductor.

Thanks Steven! I will be getting my Eurail pass validated at the Zurich Airport so we are fine there.

I received my Venice to Budapest sleeper ticket today from DB. The way they did it though was that they priced it as a sleeper with the ticket portion added for Slovenia/Croatia/Budapest. They indicated on the ticket "4 Teil Pass 3" which apparently means it includes the actual tickets for these 3 countries (this is what they wrote on the paperwork that came with the ticket).

This is different than my night train Prague to Basel. I purchased the supplement which came as 1 ticket for 4 and then I later was able (when the 90 days arrived)to get the ticket for Prague to Shoena (border) and we have one for each of us (my Eurail pass doesn't cover Czech Republic).

Sounds like you are all set to go!

You can be confident that night train reservations and tickets for that specific train need not be validated because they are only valid for that specific date and time (I presume your point-to-point ticket is for a set date/time). The tickets that might need validation are for routes where the ticket does not have a set day/time on it... but even if the ticket does not, it does not always need to be validated.

Always best to check. :o)

Thanks a ton! We will somehow manage to get through Italy without dealing with a ticket validation...yeah us!

The point-to-point for Prague doesn't need to be validated because it's just not required even though it has a date range (took that train last year).
