Using Swiss Pass/Lander tickets

We have a swiss pass for our travel in a few weeks and will also be using Lander tickets in germany. I know the trains you can hop on and off (excluding scenic in Switz and the intercity in Germany) but since these passes and tickets are good for other transportation (bus, boat, etc) how do you use in these instances? Can you hop on and off these and show your pass to the driver or do you have to get an actual ticket (free) using your pass?

I know that may sound like a duh question, but i've never used these passes in previous Europe trips and have always paid for bus travel, etc.
Thanks!

The Länder-Tickets in Germany are valid for regional trains (IRE/RE/RB) in that state (Land). They cannot be used on any express trains (ICE/IC/EC). They are also valid for S-Bahn and for conveyances (U-Bahn, trams, and buses) in most metro transit areas, and for most regional buses (example RVO in So. Bavaria). As far as I know, they are not valid for any boats. You just buy the Länder-Ticket from a ticket automat, sign it, and show it to the conductor when he asks for your ticket or to the bus driver when you get on the bus.
