Using rail passes in Ger. and Switz.

We will be doing a bit of train travel in Germany and Switzerland. For now the best deal looks to be a Swiss Half-Fare card, and the German Pass. Our first leg will be from Frankfurt to Bern; if we can't get the Half-Fare card until we arrive at in Switzerland, how will we apply it to the ticket we'll purchase in Frankfurt?

Can you pick up you half fare card in Basel? Then use the German Rail pass to Basel Bad Bhf. You might have to spend a coupe of Euro for the tram from Basel Bad Bhf to Basel SBB. But then use the half fare card to Bern.

You can arrange to have the half-fare card shipped to you. Not sure how else you can get it before you arrive. Are you traveling in Germany after your stay in Switzerland? If not, you don't need a railpass for Germany. You need a ticket to Switzerland. Two people can buy advance-sale tickets Frankfurt - Bern at the German railways site for as little as 78 Euros total. Try 92 days out, the earliest you can buy, for the best price. http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

We will be traveling in Switz. for a while, then back into Ger. for the rest of the trip. The German Pass will be a great deal for us; perhaps waiting until arrival in Bern to get the Swiss Half fare card, having purchased Frankfurt-Bern in advance, will be the best value. Thanks.
