First-time European traveler question. Flying April 15th from the West Coast (USA) to Inverness, Scotland, and then returning April 27th, from Edinburgh, Scotland. We want to use our One World Alliance Partner points. Any suggestions on airlines and how to best use points? Since this community is so well-traveled, I put my research on hold and thought I’d ask the experts!
What do you mean by One World Alliance Partner points? Are you intending to use
AA miles, Avios, or Finnair points? Each will have different redemption amounts and
options. You can only book with AA points through AA, Avios through either BA or
Iberia, and Finnair points through Finnair.
1) You're pretty late in looking for redemptions, so best to get on it now. You may need to
be flexible in order to get the best use of your miles.
2) If you fly BA out of Edinburgh back to the US, you will pay a hefty amount in charges
as BA does not remove the additional fuel surcharge from the redemption amount.
You may want to consider a short positioning flight to Amsterdam, Paris, Madrid, etc,
that you pay for in cash, and then use your points for the transatlantic segment.
3) If you find you have enough points for one way but not roundtrip, don't book until
you confirm what the one-way fare is in cash for the other leg. Taking #2 into account,
you would obviously use miles for the leg to Scotland, and pay for the leg coming back.
One-way fares internationally are usually not 50% of the RT fare.
To claify we have Alaska Air points. Thank you for the advice:-)
Hi. I have used Alaska points to book on American Airlines. Dont know how well this works to Scotland. Steps for using Alaska points on American are as follows (per the internet).
Key Details for Using Alaska Miles on American Airlines:
Booking Process: Select "Use miles" on the Alaska Airlines homepage and search for flights; American Airlines options will appear in the results.
Availability: Not all American flights are available with Alaska miles. If a flight doesn't show up, it may not be available for partner booking.
Best Value: Redeeming miles for American flights is considered a high-value use of Alaska miles, often offering better deals, particularly for domestic routes.
Fees & Changes: You can change or cancel these award bookings, often right up to departure, though fees may apply.
FYI: the first time I needed to make a booking when I was unsure of how to do it, I used a service called Award Magic. I am not affiliated with them. But in 2022 I think they charged me $40 to corral my points on various accounts to fly into one country and out of another. It was worth it to me and I learned some tricks that I have used since 2022 to fly in points. Hope this helps.
If your currency is Alaska Airlines points, then the only suggestion is what has been
described - look at options through the Alaska Air site. Normally you may want to
get a first look at options and then monitor, as mileage redemption amounts can
change quite often. Given your trip is 2 months away, your tolerance for risk and
how many miles you have are the major factors.
I believe you can redeem Alaska (Atmos) points on Aer Lingus, so that might be another option. The advantage there is that Dublin airport has U.S. customs preclearance. However, they don't fly to Inverness that time of year; the closest you could get is Edinburgh.
The only OneWorld Airline that flies to Inverness is British Airways.
If your miles won't get you to Inverness, then you could fly to London and get a cheap flight from there or into Edinburgh and get the train to Inverness.
