USAir adding Europe flights out of Charlotte

USAir plans to start seasonal summer service from Charlotte to Madrid and Dublin. The daily nonstop service will run from May through October of next year...... Will this help anyone's planning? Or help USAir flyers to bypass Philadelphia?

Not much help. My first priority is to avoid Philly. Second priority is to avoid US Air.

I'm seconding Frank, except my first priority is to avoid US Airways.

USAir service is definitely sub-standard. Here's what I wrote in my blog in 2007, "Remind me not to fly a US airline again. They rented the earphones for the movie for $5 (or €5!), then sold wine and beer for $5. "Breakfast" was a doughnut and the coffee was definitely not up to German standards." I far prefer Lufthansa.

The service ON the plane was fine - it was the service off the plane that was the deal-breaker. They lost my friend's and my luggage (it didn't get on the plane with us from Philly to Manchester, England) and we finally got it back the last night that we were in Europe, after a 2-week trip. Their customer service over the phone was terrible (each person we spoke with told us something different) and we had to buy clothing, toiletries, etc. When we returned to the U.S., our luggage missed the flight from Philly to Chicago and it took them 5 days to get it back to me in St. Louis. After my trip I went through the proper channels with US Airways to get reimbursed for my expenses but got the runaround. They owe me $200. I'm never flying them again.

My USAIR flight last summer from Rome to Charlotte was the worst flight I've ever had. Ever. I could go one and on. And the Charlotte airport does not have the capacity for the flights they have already have. I will avoid it like the plague.

I have to say that USAir is not as bad as some make it sound. Every airline I know has passengers who have had serious problems. And I have to speak up for 'MY' airport!!! Charlotte is a great place to fly to/from. Much better than Philly. We even have rockers where you can rest during layovers. Seriously- give it a try.

I've had good experiences flying to Paris through Charlotte on US Air. And I like the Charlotte airport too.

One of the worse flights I have ever taken was CDG- Charlotte last May on US Air. Flew business class and crew was inattentive at best bordering on surly. Charlotte airport immigration agent was a complete jerk, once through immigration you had to join the regular outside queue to re-screen and then we had to argue with the lounge attendant for access to the lounge. Apparently, first class tickets do not exist in US Air despite what the gate agent and the ticket say. Terrible, terrible, terrible service. US Air is the poster child of how bad a US airline can be, IMHO

FOr the past 5 years that I have traveled to Europe, my favorites have been on USAir and Delta. Go figure. USAir had good vegetarian airplane food, decent in flight entertainment, and easy upgrades.

USAir is a bummer, but I agree Charlotte airport isn't so bad. One good thing with USAir is you can get wifi in the air.

My worst transatlantic flight ever was on US Air[INVALID]we were delayed on the ground for two hours while they tried in vain to fix one of the toilets in coach. They were unsuccessful in the end, so we were stuck with one working toilet and one very smelly one. Then they ran out of food before getting to my row. Though, honestly, the stench would have made eating unappetizing anyway. Oh, and the seat in front of me was broken and wouldn't un-recline. But, in the end, it got me where I needed to go. No matter how unpleasant the flight is, as long as it is a safe landing, I'll deal with it. And bypassing Philly sounds like an improvement to me.

Like Toni, I feel the need to defend USAir. I've flown countless number of times without major incident. I think they delayed my bag once. This is minor compared to the problems I've had on Continental and Delta (once almost falling out of the sky). I flew USAir to Europe in June (after Delta canceled my flight) and it was fine, nothing fancy. I'm using miles to go to Rome in a few months. Even if you don't like the airline, more choice and more competition is a good thing.

I am totally with the thumbs down on USAIR. Last night I booked flights to Germany on Lufthansa for $1186. Same route available on USAir for $8xx. I was sorta considering it, but my travel partner ( my mother) said - ABSOLUTELY NOT - I'd rather pay the extra $300. ON THE OTHER HAND, CHARLOTTE is a WONDERFUL airport, one of my favourites (just wish it was located about 80 miles further South on I-77.

We've experienced the surly flight attendants and cancelled flights on USAir. However, we've arranged 2 different group bookings with their Group Travel department and they have always bent over backward to help us.
