USA TO ROME HELP!!

I am planning a cruise out of Rome on June 20, 2008. Wow i am looking at air fare now and it costs more than the cruise. When should I start looking for airfare? When are the sales typically? We live in Virginia so I always look at Ric, IAD, PHL, JFK. I can get to those airports. US air use to have a good fare nonstop PHL to FCO. BUT OMG what has happened now? Will I be able to find a good fare?

First, you are way too far out to get good fares, so relax a bit. Begin now checking the fares so you know what you're dealing with and what is "good." Then you will be ready to snatch a good one when it comes along. From the west coast our best fares for summer are usually right after spring break as there is a slight lull in buying, but I don't watch the fares in the east. I just enjoy the dream of going, so spend a little time all year watching to see what is going on. Baring major upheaval (oil shortage, disasters, etc.), I promise they will be lower than they are right now for next summer. Airlines capitalize on anxious travelers who want the ticket in hand.

As the above poster said, I'd start watching now to see what a "normal" fare is. But I wouldn't expect to see any real deals until maybe November or December for spring/summer travel -- maybe even later.

This past June we paid $1000 for Phil to Rome, Zurich to Phil on US Air. What are you seeing now? Historically we view a $1000 or a little under as a good fare with good connections.
