My wife and I will be traveling to the UK from Portland, OR next year. The idea of roughly 14 hours straight on a plane is almost enough for my wife to say "no" to the entire trip. I need to plan our flights to have a one day layover on the east coast of the US, with a very easy airport lodging situation. Something like Zaventem in Brussels would be perfect. Ideas?
I much prefer a non stop from Los Angeles to UK or anywhere in Europe- get it all over with. However we have stayed overnight at Washington DC Dulles. there are a number of reasonable chain hotels on the airport property. The one we were at (Sheraton I think) had a shuttle.
I've flown from L.A. direct to London several times and every time it felt worse. So, looked into Business Class tickets - Yikes! Now I always fly to either Boston or Chicago and get a hotel (with a shuttle). Good night's sleep, excellent dinner and a daytime flight across the pond. I happen to use HOTWIRE and always get a good deal at say a Holiday Inn Express. Ditto on the return trip. Probably just luck of the draw but since I started traveling with this method I haven't gotten sick once (knock on wood). Word to the wise. If the price is close use the same airline for both legs and make the connecting flight within a 24 hour time frame which makes it one ticket instead of two separate tones. This will "help" to save your bacon if one of the flights is screwed up.
I agree than an overnight break would enhance your trip. I suggest you AVOID hotels outside JFK if at all possible! The area where most of the hotels are located is not one where you could enjoy an after dinner stroll. Dulles or even Atlanta (using MARTA would allow a stay almost anywhere in the city) are much better choices.
