Upcoming Travel Plans Via Train In Germany/Austria

Hi, I'd like to get your opinion on the following itinerary for a trip from April 28th - May 9th. Frankfurt> Bonn> Vienna> Rothenburg o d Tauber> Frankfurt. Dates: 29, 30 in Bonn, 1-4 in Vienna, and 4-8 Rothenburg. I usually stay overnight in Frankfurt the night before my flight, so as not to be rushed. My wife and I will be travelling by train, since, due to my Alzheimer's related dementia I can no longer drive. We're also hoping that we can get assistance through DB to help her with boarding since she has some knee problems which don't allow her to rush between changes. Thanks for your input! Bill

Without checking the websites, I suspect that Bonn, Vienna (that's not German Rail), and Frankfurt will have elevators to the tracks to assist you. Rothenburg is at ground level, so should not be a problem. However, Steinach will be. I think if you notify German Rail, they will assist you in Steinach. I believe the number in Germany is (0)180 5 512512

Bill, I'm pleased that you're getting an opportunity for a trip back to Europe. I haven't checked your Blog recently, but hope that you're managing well considering the circumstances. As I recall, there are Elevators at the Frankfurt Airport leading to the rail station, but it's been a few years so I can't recall the details. You might have a look at This Website as it provides some information on "Help Points" where airport staff will assist travellers with mobility issues. Be sure to allow lots of time for each trip. If you have to change trains at smaller stations, this will probably involve stairs down to a tunnel, and then back up stairs to the next platform. Some stations have ramps and some have Elevators, but the facilities vary somewhat. Good luck and happy travels!

Hey Bill! How are you? Glad to see you returning to Germany for a visit again. Let me know the times, etc. in a pm and I will be happy to hop on out to the airport and lend a hand. Plus meet your lovely wife. If you are taking the Regional train to Bonn, I will be happy to ride along too if you don't mind, as I have a good friend in Bonn that I can go visit for the day. Can't help with Vienna, but might be able to help with Rothenburg - Frankfurt and then Frankfurt to the airport the next day.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice and yes, I remember those stairs in the smaller stations, Ken! :) I was hoping I (we) would get to see you again this trip, Jo, and I will send you our itinerary as soon as I know it. Thanks for your offer to ride with us, and, of course, for the help. Bill
