Unlimited Railpasses

Hello Traveling Community, My partner and I will be leaving for Europe in a few weeks and I have yet to decide on a rail pass. Our itinerary is as follows: Aug 4-Aug8 Switzerland (Geneva/Lausanne/Montrauex) Aug 8th Night Train to Rome Aug 9-11th Rome Midday Train to Florence on the 11th Afternoon of 11th - 13th Florence Night train back to Switzerland on the 13th
Flying out to Lebanon on the 15th Can anyone give me some advice on what (if any) kind of rail passes to buy? Are the unlimited 8 or 10 day passes from Eurail worth the money? Thank you in advance for the input!

I just checked the timetables on the German Rail site and the Swiss Rail site and I didn't find a direct night train from Geneva/Lausanne/Montreux to Rome. What I did find is an Eurocity train leaving Geneva at 18:42, with stops in Lausanne and Montreux, and arriving at Milano Centrale at 22:35. There is an InterCityNight train that leaves Milano Centrale at 23:20 and arrives at Roma Tiburtina at 07:20. There is no practical way to take a night train on the way from Florence to Geneva. Darwin Airline SA flies directly from Florence to Geneva. Railpasses won't be cost effective for your itinerary. Book Geneva, Lausanne, or Montreux to Milan on the Swiss Rail site. Book the MIlan-Rome night train on the Trenitalia site. Book either bunks in a 4-person couchette or beds in a 2-person sleeper. Book Rome-Florence on the Trenitalia site.

You have to do the math. The days of a rail pass being a no brainer are long pass. Use the local train sites to determine the p2p prices. Discounts are often available for advance purchases. And remember you must pay a premium or commonly called a seat reservation for most trains even with the pass. Unfortunately you have do the homework.

Sarah, I can be corrected by Tim or Lola but I don't think that there are night trains into or out of Italy from Switzerland anymore. The night train into and out of Florence, Rome and Venice comes from Munich via Austria.

Hi! Thank you for the quick response. I attempted to do that homework a couple months ago but it seemed too early to have solidified time tables. I will try that again thank you! Side question: For the night trains, is a couchette comfortable enough? Or is it worth it to try for a sleeper car? Thanks Again!

That's strange; I saw that posted elsewhere on this site but I was just on the sbb.ch website and there seem to be plenty of night trains. I am getting very confused as a first time planner!
