Just a musing on one of our itineraries... Business straight thru. We have a three leg hop to Stockholm. Leg 1 is United operated to O'hare and then connecting two flights on Lufthansa operated. Booked a months ago for August travel. Received a notification from United recently that our United flight up to O'hare was cancelled and they substituted another/later United flight. Kicker is the connection was only 38 minutes. That's AI crazy. So anyway, after unsuccessful attempts to change the flight myself online, I reached out to United and told them the issue and asked that they change just the one initial leg United flight to an earlier flight. I provided the hoped for flight number and verified beforehand they had seats. To which they came back offering a different itinerary going thru Newark. So we would need to reselect Lufthansa seats etc and it would throw other things off as well. I asked United again to just change the first leg and was told they couldn't, they tried but it was throwing an error as not compatible with Lufthansa's fare class. Now mind you its a United operated flight to be changed and a United ticket . I politely kept on it and eventually the agent escalated to the ticketing group and in the end was able to make the substitution. Its just interesting how the code share partnerships and fare rules are so interwoven and in cases such as this, how persistence is necessary. Happy Trails.
