United Flight Suspensions in June

If you are travelling long-haul on United next month be sure to double-check your booking. United has had to suspend seven routes in June due to aircraft shortages. Suspended are EWR-OGG, EWR-HNL, EWR-NRT, IAD-GRU, IAD-GVA, IAD-HNL, and IAD-DUB. In addition, EWR-ARN is being completely discontinued (was to be summer-only).

The issue appears to be delays in getting United's Pratt-Whitney 777-200s re-certified. United has 19 "vanilla" 777-200s and another 29 777-200ERs still grounded after the uncontained engine failure back in Feb 2021. The planes were supposed to start coming back into service next week (after engine modifications and increased inspection frequency). That has been pushed back until the end of the month at the earliest.

United also has 22 GE-powered 777-200ERs still flying, but 48 grounded planes leaves a big hole.

Yup…. They cancelled our flight ewr - ARN.

This is for our RS Scandinavian tour in July.

I noticed on my United app.

I spent Saturday 2.5 on the phone waiting and talking to getting new flights.

Then I noticed Sunday, she screwed up our last leg Zurich to Stockholm. So back on the phone Sunday night.

What a nightmare

Yup! My flight was cancelled. took 10 hours on hold ro rebook and Im wondering if I have too tight a conncetion now- only 1 hour 5 min in Frankfurt to get from United to Lufstanza to get to Stockholm. Is this an impossible connection?

Ick. 1:05 in FRA sounds tight to me. Are there later flights that day you could get rebooked on if you miss it?

If you have the United app on your phone you might try the "message" function to do any rebooking. I had good luck last September when phone wait times were obscene.

Updating my original post: United started bringing those planes on line Saturday 5/21. There are now 17 flying and another three scheduled out of storage in Victorville tomorrow.

So do you think there is any chnace of the Newark to Stockholm route being reinstated? That was a much better flight and connection for me.

You could check to see if the SAS flight between Newark and Stockholm is an option. SAS is part of star alliance but for some reason SAS flights never seem to show on the United website.

Unfortunately I don't expect that to happen. While the other flights were "suspended," the EWR-ARN flight has been completely pulled from the schedule.

Unrelated, but I did see the other day United is adding SFO-ZRH starting June 1st. I'm currently booked FCO-ZRH-ORD-PDX in September on LX/UA and would love to hit the US at SFO vs. ORD but I don't see that option.
