Sharon,
Is that the order in which you're traveling? I'm just asking because it seems like it would make more sense to got London-Bath-Harrogate-Edinburgh. I'm sure you could do train or National Express Bus between each city, but car rental was the first thing that sprang to my mind. That would be my preference.

Sharon, if you don't want to rent a car and drive on the "left side" of the road, then purchasing point-to-point train tickets will probably be the most cost effective. Especially if you can take advantage of the advance fare prices by purchasing early. Also, you can get a senior rail card for £28 each that will save you about a third on some fares - you'll have to do the math and see if you'll use it enough to recoop the cost. You can get all the details, prices, and schedules at nationalrail.co.uk. Point-to-point works well if you can be committed to an exact travel day and time; but if that's not possible, then the BritRail FlexPass may be a better deal for you. Also, if any of your trips are long, say London to Edinburgh which is 4 hours, I would suggest getting the Senior 1st Class Pass. You'll have more comfortable seating, less crowded railcars so more room to stow your luggage, and usually snacks and beverages are included. Have a geat trip - Mary

Sharon, If you have lots of time and a more "relaxed" travel schedule, travel via National Express Coach is generally the most "cost efficient way" for travels around the U.K. However, if you want a good combination of cost and time efficient, travel by rail is generally a better method especially for longer distances. You may find it very helpful to have a look at This Website. It may be a good idea to pre-book rail tickets to obtain the best discounts. Happy travels!
