UK Train Ticket Question

If, let's say, I want to go from London to Edinburgh with a point to point ticket:

1) If I buy a ticket between those two cities, could I then make a stopover in say Newcastle for a few hours on that ticket without incurring any other charges, or would I have to buy two separate tickets London-Newcastle and Newcastle-Edinburgh? (And what about reservations on two different trains?)

2) If the answer to the above is only one ticket, what happens if I want to stay overnight in Newcastle? Still one ticket or now I need two tickets?

Thank you in advance.

1) If you buy an Anytime ticket, you may stopover anywhere along the route, but all travel must be on the same day. See this page on the National Rail site. No seat reservations are needed, but you can get them free at any National Rail station.

2) Two tickets.

Walk-up fares on longer routes can be very expensive. Booking separate advance discount fares for each leg will be cheaper than one walk-up ticket. For example, an advance discount fare ticket for London-Edinburgh can be as low as £12. The walk-up fare can be over £100. See the fare schedule here. Discount fares usually become available about 60 days in advance. See the right-hand side of the home page for the current booking dates.
