UK train service and rail passes

Hi, I will be traveling to the UK at the end of November this year and I am wondering if there is a web site which would help me work out how to get from Heathrow to whatever stop is nearest my hotel? Plus as I will be relying on public transport for my entire trip, would it be better to buy a Brit Rail Pass before I leave? Does that cover ALL the train services ?? Plus do I just validate it on my first train journey and then can hop on and off any train until my pass expires???

While you're waiting for the experts to answer, I'll just clarify that the tube (London Underground) is NOT covered by BritRail passes. BritRail passes only cover trains between cities, and suburban train service out of cities (this exists in London, but is of very limited use to most visitors). For your London time, you'll need the tube and buses; you can use a Pay-As-You-Go Oyster card, daily or weekly travelcards on an Oyster card, or a paper travel card (which can qualify you for two-for-one discounts at many attractions, if you're not traveling alone). Which one to use depends on your circumstances. So, please clarify where you are going in the UK, how long you will be in each place, and how many are in your travel party, so people can tell you the best deals. From Heathrow to your hotel, the first place to check is the hotel's own website (these days, many have great details, maps, etc). If that's not helpful, let us know your hotel, so the local experts can chime in.

Sorry Harold, I guess I should have paid more attention to what information I gave..lol. I am going to be primarily in London, and from there traveling to Salisbury and Cardiff for day trips, but as I mentioned, the majority of my time will be spent in and around London. I felt it would be easier to base myself in London and the public transport is so much better there, so I would be able to get around without any hassles. I have heard of the Oyster card and will have to do more research on those also. I will be staying at the Premier Inn London County Hall, and am just waiting to hear back from them about my 14 night stay. :)

Sorry, still missed out some bits..lol. I am traveling solo, and I don't have a plan to spend a certain period of time in each place...will just mostly be day trips to and from locations, maybe staying overnight if there is just too much to see in one place, but that is only for places outside of London of course. ;)
