UK->Ireland and vice versa

What is the cheapest and/or easiest way to get from Ireland to the UK, or vice versa? We were planning to start our trip in Ireland, but werent sure if we should go from NI to Scotland and work down England, or what? I should note we dont want to use Ryanair. Or we can go from Uk to Ireland, it just depends on what is easiest. And on the ferry, does one HAVE to buy a seat or room (without a car), and what happens if you do not? Thanks :)

There are only 3 classes of fares on the NI-Scotland ferry. They're explained here: http://tinyurl.com/72q4jbn Basically the higher fares buy you such things as express boarding, access to the lounge, and refundability of your ticket. The same website will show you the ferry routes, cost of tickets, etc.

Thanks. There is really only that one company that does ferries? I must've been looking at ferries elsewhere, maybe from France or something. So if I do not the "upgrade seat" option, I'm assuming I still have a seat somewhere, just a basic one?

Yes, there'll be open seating on the ferry. There are some pictures of the ferry interior on the website, so you can see what it looks like. You can find a list of all ferry companies operating out of UK ports here: http://tinyurl.com/78umbmo

Aer Lingus has cheap fares from London to Dublin, Shannon, or Cork.

We flew from Edinburgh to Dublin on Aer Lingus. Because of competition with Ryanair, prices were low. I based my decision between airlines on seat pitch since 2 of the 3 travelers are quite tall.
