I will be traveling in a rental car from Pisa to Florence on major roads, then to Siena and Orvieto on scenic roads, before hitting the autoroute to Rome. How easily can I find gasoline along the way?
Very easily. There is usually a gas station in every town on the way and certainly from Pisa to Florence they are everywhere.
Bear in mind that gas on the Autostrada is more expensive than gas from shopping centers on the outskirts of larger towns. On the other hand, they are open for longer hours.
and be prepared for a heart attack when you realize that the seemingly reasonable price is in euros for liters instead of dollars for gallons.
Gas price in Italy currently converts to $8.16 per gallon of regular gas and $7.98 per gallon of Diesel. In addition to that Diesel gets much, much better milage than regular.
Thanks for the help. I have also read reports that in small towns, some gasoline stations temporarily close in the afternoon, and some even close for an entire day. Is this reliable information?
Yes. That happens, especially in small towns. That's why gas is more expensive on the Autostrade.
Lamont - we were in Tuscany last week, taking almost the same route your planning. It was a holiday weekend so traffic was heavy but gas was plentiful.
In some small towns you will see the "station" is closed (unmanned)... but the pumps are still working - insert your cash, bancomat, or credit card! We filled up outside Siena in that manner.
We were driving a diesel and were paying about 1.38 Euros a liter. Since 1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liters that means a gallon of gas cost us $8.20 - so get only enough car to carry you, your luggage, and drive on the autstrada! Anything more could be a waste of money. And of course In Italy, get the FULL insurance coverage!
Ciao,
