Planning a trip to Istanbul with a Rick Steves' tour group in the future. How good is Turkish Airways? They seem to be significantly cheaper.

One of the best. They're cheaper because there's subsidized. Plus, they make gobs of money on their short-haul routes.

They're great. I flew them twice and very inexpensively ( ~ $560 from Dulles Airport, VA to Istanbul Ataturk)

They are a very good airline and gaining more respect as more US passengers try their service. I have flown both international and domestic and would definitely choose them is the price is less. On a side note, their food is better than most airlines with
Mediterranean choices.

Just be sure to recheck your reservation frequently. I booked Turkish Airways twice for an upcoming trip (one from Canada to Istanbul, another from Kayseri to Antalya). Both flights had schedule changes that they did not tell me about, and both changes would have made it impossible to catch connecting flights.
