Turkish Airlines business class carry on allowance

Appreciate some clarification on this. I had seen that biz class is allowed two 8 kg carry ons but today I saw this:

According to TSA (Transportation Security Administration) requirements for flights from the USA; one (1) piece of cabin baggage and one (1) personal item per passenger is accepted when passing through TSA security checkpoints at the airport except for the following personal items:

a. Medical aids (such as crutches and wheelchairs)b. Musical instrumentsc. One bag of photographic equipmentd. Duty free items

For this reason, our passengers traveling in Business class on routes departing from the USA are entitled to 2 pieces of cabin baggages; one piece of cabin baggage and one personal item is carried in the cabin and the other cabin baggage is carried under the aircraft as checked baggage free of charge. Please do not forget to deliver your second cabin baggage to our check in counters.

I've flown biz class on other carriers and I've never had issues w/ bringing on two carry ons plus small personal item, so this is new. Has anyone else had issues w/ bringing on two carry ons on business class? I'm trying to avoid checking bags on the way there (flying LAX-IST-VIE). Thanks in advance

I'm sure you've read the Turkish Airlines carry on rules:

https://www.turkishairlines.com/en-us/any-questions/carry-on-baggage/

Perhaps you have Star Alliance Gold Status and would be subject to those rules?

Star Alliance Gold Card holders ... (economy class rule deleted) ....can carry two pieces of hand baggage, each weighing 8 kg and measuring 23x40x55 cm, and one personal item for their Business class flights. The bag as a personal item must not exceed 40x30x15 cm in size.

ETA: Actually, it looks like the same applies to any business class traveler, Gold or not.

yeah, my post was copied and pasted directly from their rules at the link you posted.
I have never had an issue with two carry ons in biz class flying on other airlines, which is why I was a bit surprised, bc they're putting this on TSA. Wanted to know what others have experienced flying biz on TA departing from US.

I've flown a few times in TK business class and have never checked a bag and have always carried on 2 items - a roll-on bag and a backpack. Are you asking if you can take 3 items - 2 of which are suitcases?

Clearly it's nonsensical. Turkish Airlines shows different allowances for different classes. TSA doesn't check to see what airline or what class you're flying when they examine your bags, so they can't know what your airline allowance is.

The only time you show your boarding pass is at the identification check. Then you put it away. The TSA baggage security personnel never look at it.

I regularly go through security with my purse outside of my backpack, often 3 items, and consolidate as required before boarding. I'm always in the TSA pre lane. It's never an issue.

Arnold: I am asking if anyone flying TA business class has flown with THREE pieces, which is TA's business class allowance, two 8 kg pieces and one 4 kg personal item. On a flight departing from the US.

CW Social: I know, I just flew Fiji Airways biz class, and they allow two pieces totaling 14 kg, max 10 kg for the heavier piece, and one personal item. TSA doesn't care. I just wanted to know if anyone has brought three pieces of carry on for TA. Their carry on allowance states two 8 kg pieces and one 4 kg pieces for business, then their addendum says passengers leaving the US have to check in their second 8 kg piece because of TSA. ??

I don’t think TSA will care. It is the gate agent that I would be worried about. If you are flying from LAX, then the TK staff will be contract workers and whatever they decide at boarding will be what you will need to follow.

I’ve never had 3 pieces so can’t provide any data points similar to your situation

Arnold, thanks for your reply. I might look into consolidating into a rolling case and a backpack or duffel and observing what my fellow passengers are carrying. 8 kg is a bit tight for a rolling case but others have said put the heavier items in the backpack or duffel.

I wouldn’t worry about the 8 kg allowance honestly. No one is going to weigh your bag when you are flying in business class.

Arnold...I hope TA doesn't. I've scoured the forums and it's very much 'it depends on the agent'. Fiji did weigh my roller bag and tagged it as cabin baggage, but did not weigh my backpack. But their business class allowance is two pieces, 14 kg combined, with one piece weighing up to 10 kg, so I was fine. I'm at 8.25 kg on mine :-D but people have said if they do bat an eyelash (which they probably won't for biz class) I can repack in my backpack, which I do try to keep light (bum shoulder).

I flew Jetstar, NZ domestic, last month, and I'd bought extra carry-on allowance, and they didn't weigh anyone lol. And the forums said they're usually pretty strict! So go figure.
I'm not too worried for this flight (LAX-IST-VIE) since it's a shorter trip, but I'm a tad worried for another TA flight in April (LAX-IST-FCO) since it's longer, and I do try to do carry on only.

Hi - I flew Turkish Air business class SEA-IST in April 2024. I typically use one carryon size suitcase that is well over the 8 kg limit and a small backpack when I travel to Europe. Based on reading Turkish Airlines forums and not wanting to chance having to check an overweight bag in, I decided to bring 2 carryons both within their carryon size and 8 kg limit (suitcase and a samsonite backpack) as well as my smaller personal item (crossbody bag). So I carried on two carryons plus a personal item. No problems thru TSA.

Ah, thanks much sloo, that's exactly what I wanted to see. I have not seen TSA paying much attn to how much luggage people are carrying.

I would agree.. I've never heard of or seen TSA get involved in luggage weighing or counting. Do be aware when we were flew Turkish Air Business recently, Izmir to Istanbul to Atlanta, we had to go up to the ticket counter in Izmir for a boarding pass reason and the agent did weigh our carry on bags. There was no weighing at any of the gates either going over from Atlanta or returning. We did as you are planning, two carry on's each @8KG and one personal item.

I have never seen TSA take issue with how many pieces of stuff one puts on the belt for scanning.

The only issue is the gate agent telling folks they need to consolidate to 2 pieces ( for airlines that have that limit).

Thank you for the replies. I also posted on flyertalk and tripadvisor and one person directed me to flylax (LAX official) and there were instructions for one carry on and one personal item per passenger, and there is some discussion on other forums about TSA or FAA limiting the carry on items...others have heard of the one carry on limit imposed in the US by either TSA or FAA, but nobody can pin it down, and former TSA agents on flyertalk say "we are not the one bag police". Re weighing, the Asian airlines have typically been sticklers (at least at LAX) about weighing carry on items, bc US airlines tend to go by dimensions, so American passengers have not been aware of weight limits. I've flown Fiji and Air NZ biz and they weigh the roller bag but not the duffel/backpack. Based on what I am seeing here I am going to do something similar to sloo, and bring a roller bag, and a duffel/backpack, and stuff my smaller personal-item bag inside the duffel/backpack. Consider putting additional items in the roller bag to save my poor shoulder/back after the weigh in/counter check in. Thanks again for all of the help on this....I've never flown TA before, but I'd not seen this "only one carry on" when flying Fiji or Air NZ (prior to that I was always peasant class :-D).

Wrong! We flew business class on Lufthansa this year and had both our carry on bags confiscated at the counter for weighing over the allowed amount by 1/2 kg each!

Was this in Germany? We had this very unfortunate incident a few years back where we were transiting through Frankfurt en route to Vienna, and someone had made a mistake in stamping my then-late teen's passport, and the next guy ripped her a new one. Just womped on her. I went over and I asked what the matter was and he went on about the incorrect stamp. And I asked why he was upset at her and what could we have done to avoid such a mistake, perhaps it was a better idea to let the mis-stamper know, and he had no response, really, but just glared and glowered. I've gotta say I've traveled pretty extensively and that was one of the more unpleasant episodes we've experienced. But yeah, good thing it was the return flight...I do often just check in my bags on the way home...full of dirty laundry and liquid souvenirs....like whiskey marmalade....
