I flew back to the USA this evening. Not long before we landed, we encountered some severe turbulance.
I looked at the onscreen map to see where we were. The turbulence started just as we entered US airspace.
I kid you not.

Looking on the weather map there looks to be a large storm on the East Coast right now.
Oh, I get it now. Funny….
… and when you landed?
Made me laugh, Frank II.
Ha, that is very interesting, Frank (and a little scary). We're heading back tomorrow so I will check to see what happens. Glad you made it back safely!
It is a truth universally acknowledged that turbulence will occur while I’m in the WC. Every time.
The flights Hawaii to mainland are notorious for turbulence. Something about air currents. . .Our flight a couple weeks ago was something. Right after I received my food and two glasses of red wine, the plane start rolling, bouncing and occasionally dropping, for an HOUR! I was trying to hold my tray, wine and try to gulp down the wine. By the time the flight was calm, I looked like a murder victim. In the future it will be white wine or G & T, and I'll cover myself before dinner with their blanket.
I was able to get the wine out of my t-shirt!
"Why the U.S. is leading the world in extreme weather catastrophes"
[snip]
Blame geography for the U.S. getting hit by stronger, costlier, more varied and frequent extreme weather than anywhere on the planet, several experts said. Two oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, the Rocky Mountains, jutting peninsulas like Florida, clashing storm fronts and the jet stream combine to naturally brew the nastiest of weather.
That’s only part of it. Nature dealt the United States a bad hand, but people have made it much worse by what, where and how we build, several experts told The Associated Press.
Then add climate change, and “buckle up. More extreme events are expected,” said Rick Spinrad, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Avoid too much beans in nutrition before flights. ;-)
I guess that everybody here in Transportation forum knows the Turbulence Forecast with the basic indicators in the upper right corner?
For transatlantic travelers the eastbound and westbound forecasts are most important but there are many more available.
You can see twice a day on Flightradar how airlines change their flight routes across Atlantic based on this.

@Jane, uhhhh, I mean Mary....you made me laugh!
Good one! Lol
It is a truth universally acknowledged
Hey, no messing with sacred scripture, Mary and Pam!
Some got it, some didn't.
It is a universal truth that the ride will get bumpy as soon as you are served a meal.
And ladies, at least you're already sitting down when the turbulence hits.
We got it and are expecting turbulence on our return also.
Got it. Chuckled. Sighed.
And ladies, at least you're already sitting down when the turbulence hits.
Which is why I always wear shoes in the plane's WC.
As we all know, hot air rises.
