Just read on Clark Howard's site:
With a backlog of travelers waiting to sign up for the Transportation Security Administration's PreCheck trusted traveler program, a temporary enrollment center will open in Atlanta August 16-20 at the Courtyard Atlanta Airport South in College Park.
Travelers can make appointments online three weeks in advance of the opening of the temporary enrollment center.
PreCheck membership, which costs $85 to enroll for five years, allows travelers the chance to go through expedited security screening with shorter lines.
There are permanent TSA PreCheck enrollment centers at Hartsfield-Jackson International, on Clark Howell Highway and on Century Boulevard NE in Atlanta and in Cartersville.
The temporary center in Atlanta is expected to enroll about 1,000 people during its week-long run in August.

My California son signed up and completed the interview for TSA PreCheck, paid the $85. Waited three weeks, nothing received. Checked his status. Another month maybe. So give yourself some time if enrolling.

I decided to go ahead and apply for GOES. I applied on June 19. I got my change of status email on July 9. When I checked the calendar for appointment dates and times, there were no dates available for July-Oct. and there were only a few left for Oct. I decided on Oct 4, convenient for both my husband and I with nearly back to back appointments. I was fine with the date, however, I did check daily for earlier dates. Last week, I received email notification about open dates. Went back online and there were plenty of open slots available for July-Oct. I chose appointment date for first week of Aug. This was the first date available for husband's schedule. By the way, we both wanted the same date due to distance from home.
Best advice, from the forum, check several times a day for earlier appointment dates!!
