Passed through EWR airport recently for an overseas flight and noticed some rather radical changes to how passengers go through various checkpoints.
TSA (this applies for both domestic and international flights): They have installed brand-new next generation baggage scanners. This means that even though the 3.4 oz rule for liquids still applies, they no longer need to be taken out of your luggage and don't need to be in zip locks. In addition, no electronics need to be taken out of luggage (including laptops, tablets, kindles). Be aware that leaving this stuff in your bags isn't optional, it's mandatory. If you remove anything the agents will force you to put them back in the bag.
Immigration: Landing cards and kisoks are no more. You simply head directly to the to the agents inside the booths. In my case he just glanced at passport, took my photo, and handed it back to me without stamping it. The transaction took no more than 15 seconds.
Customs: After baggage claim, the customs checkpoint is now exactly what you would see at a European airport: One green door if you have nothing to declare (a walk through), and a separate door for those who voluntarily declare. No more handing over a landing card/or kiosk receipt for a Customs agent to review.
