We are trying to book a red-eye train from Vienna to Zurich in early July. The OBB website works us through all the prompts and then rejects our Visa credit card. It required a Verified by Visa. Which we did. It still rejected the card asking for a 3d number. We have contacted Visa and they said the problem was on the vendor's side. Any ideas of what we need to do to book these tickets online? We emailed them two days ago and have not heard from them yet.
A lot of folks have complained about this, and it could also be that you have a rewards card that charges fees higher than the new European standards and OEBB is unwilling to swallow these fees. You should try an American Express card if you have one. They have been working for Swiss trains, whom other people have been having similar difficulties. For some reason American Express got exempted from the new EU banking regulations, at least for a while. And let your Amex card know you are making this purchase.
Maybe try buying from SBB. They sell a print at home ticket or one on your mobile phone.
