trouble with bahn and trenitalia

I'm trying a mock reservation to get from Innsbruck to Venice (Santa Lucia). On the Bahn.de site it says I need to make the reservation via phone at a cost. On Trenitalia it tells me to "look up the time tables and purchase your tickets". Can any one advise me?

Often RailEurope only sells tickets for a limited number of the trains actually available for a particular route. You
got the screen with "Look up ...." on the Trenitalia website as there is more than one station in Innsbruck and more then one in venice. Make sure the departing station is Innsbruck HBF (the main station) and then hit the invia button.

The "problem" with the Bahn site is that they don't sell tickets online for trains entirely outside of Germany. Try starting your trip in Munich, Rosenheim, or Kufstein. Kufstein is still Austria, but it is considered a border station.

We will start our trip in Munich and will be renting a car for 11 days. We were going to drop it off in Garmisch, train/bus to Hall and spend the night before leaving from Innsbruck to Venice.

So Lee, it sounds like it might be best to buy our ticket from Trenitalia, or maybe pay more via using a travel agent or via phone to book with Bahn.

Thanks!

Last I knew, Trenitalia only booked online tickets for pickup in Italy. Unless they have changed that, booking through Trenitalia wouldn't work for you.

I tried a mock booking from Kufstein and it wouldn't let me do it online. It used to. But Rosenheim works. You could drive your car to Rosenheim and met the train there.

Or you can just call DB. I've never been charged to call them; I don't think they have the mechanism to bill in the US. Anyway, it's not that much per minute.

Since the train starts in Austria, you might try the Austrian Rail site, www.oebb.at.

Booking on Trenitalia comes with an option (in Italian and English) for an e-mail confimation for trips within Italy...you jump on the train, find your assigned car and seat, and show the conductor the e-mail confirmation. There is no print out function other than that for Trenitalia. For foreign trips ending in Italy, though, the only option is for home delivery, which is only available in Italy. For the Innsbruck-Venice trip, I would suggest checking out the Austrian rail system at http://www.oebb.at/en . They have an excellent telephone-based customer service department, open 24 hours, at 011-43-5-1717.
